"Authenticity is the daily practice of letting go of who you are supposed to be, and embracing who you are."
Brené Brown Tweet
What if the most radical thing you could do was simply to be yourself?
But what does that really mean? And how do we actually do that?
We are social creatures. Community matters. The herd matters. And none of us are immune to the conditioning that comes with that – the roles assigned to us by family, culture, society. Some of those roles feel like a natural fit. Some really don’t.
It’s only when we become aware of that conditioning, that we can start to let it go.
The process helps us reconnect with our own values. Not the dominant values of the society we find ourselves living in.
Embracing who you are is a simple concept, but often not an easy process. And it requires courage.
It means:
-
- Noticing your people-pleasing tendencies
-
- Taking responsibility for how you are showing up
-
- Recognising where you change parts of yourself in order to fit in
Do we know what our values actually are, and are we living them?
Do we know our true passions, and embrace our greatest strengths?
And can we accept our supposed ‘imperfections’, without guilt or shame?
What are your thoughts on showing up authentically?
Do you find it easy, or is it a daily practice?
How do you know when you are being your authentic self?
